Комментарий. Идиома get wind of something означает «прослышать», «пронюхать», «узнать о чем-то окольными путями», обычно о чем-то, что держат в секрете. Например:
Pretty soon the papers will get wind of it. – Довольно скоро об этом пронюхают газетчики.
How did they get wind of our operation? – Как они узнали о нашей операции?

«Пройти по доске» (plank – «толстая доска», «доска обшивки корабля»). Эта идиома восходит к обычаю пиратов сбрасывать пленников в море. Пираты заставляли их идти по доске, перекинутой через борт судна, пока жертва не падала в море. В современном английском эта идиома приобрела переносный смысл и означает «быть уволенным».
