They made a list of everything they saw and gave it to the Emperor. I later translated this list into English. This is what it said:
“In the right coat pocket of the Great Man Mountain (for so I translate “Quinbus Flestrin”), we found only one large, rough piece of cloth. This cloth is big enough to be a carpet in Your Majesty’s chief room of state.
“In the left pocket we saw a huge silver box (в левом кармане мы увидели громадный серебряный ящик/сундук) which we were not able to open (который мы не могли открыть). We asked the Man Mountain to open it (мы попросили Человека-Гору открыть его) and one of us stepped in (и один из нас ступил/вошел внутрь; step – шаг; to step – ступать, шагать). He found himself up to his knees in a sort of dust (он оказался: «обнаружил себя» по колени в какой-то пыли; sort – вид, разновидность, род, сорт) which made us both sneeze (которая заставила нас обоих чихнуть/чихать).
“In the left pocket we saw a huge silver box which we were not able to open. We asked the Man Mountain to open it and one of us stepped in. He found himself up to his knees in a sort of dust which made us both sneeze.
“In his right waistcoat pocket (в правом кармане жилета/камзола; waist – талия; waistcoat – жилет; камзол /без рукавов/) we found a bundle of thin white sheets of paper (мы нашли стопку тонких листов бумаги), folded over one another (сложенных один на другой). This bundle was about the size of three men (стопка эта – размером с трех человек). It was tied with strong rope (она перевязана прочным канатом; strong – сильный; прочный, крепкий) and marked with black figures (и испещрена черными знаками; mark – знак; метка; to mark – ставить знак/и/, метку; отмечать, записывать; figure – фигура; символ, знак). We believe (мы предполагаем; to believe – верить; думать, полагать) that this was writing (что это письмена; to write – писать; writing – писание /процесс/; то, что написано: документ, письмо, запись и т. д.). Each letter was half the size of our hand (каждая буква – величиной в половину нашей ладони).
“In the left waistcoat pocket there was a sort of tool with twenty long poles (в левом кармане камзола находился некий инструмент с двадцатью длинными жердями /на нем/). We believe the Man Mountain uses this to comb his hair (мы думаем, /что/ Человек-Гора пользуется этим = им для того, чтобы расчесывать свои волосы).
“In his right waistcoat pocket we found a bundle of thin white sheets of paper, folded over one another. This bundle was about the size of three men. It was tied with strong rope and marked with black figures. We believe that this was writing. Each letter was half the size of our hand.
“In the left waistcoat pocket there was a sort of tool with twenty long poles. We believe the Man Mountain uses this to comb his hair.
“In the large pocket on the right side of his trousers (в большом кармане с правой стороны его штанов) we saw a hollow tube of iron (мы увидели полую железную трубу: «трубу из железа»), about the length of a man (длиной примерно с человека), fastened to a strong piece of wood (прикрепленную к крепкому куску дерева). There was another of the same kind in the left pocket (еще одна /труба/ того же рода была в левом кармане).
“There were several round flat pieces of white and red metal in the smaller pocket on the right side (в меньшем кармане с правой стороны было = оказалось несколько плоских кусков белого и красного металла). Some, which seemed to be silver (некоторые, которые казались серебром = по-видимому серебряные; seem – казаться, представляться, иметь вид), were so large and heavy we could hardly lift them (так велики и тяжелы, что мы едва могли поднять их).
“In the large pocket on the right side of his trousers we saw a hollow tube of iron, about the length of a man, fastened to a strong piece of wood. There was another of the same kind in the left pocket.
“There were several round flat pieces of white and red metal in the smaller pocket on the right side. Some, which seemed to be silver, were so large and heavy we could hardly lift them.
“In the left pocket there were two black tubes of strange shape (в левом кармане были две черные трубы странной формы). In each of these, there was a flat piece of metal (в каждой из них находится металлическая пластина: «плоский кусок металла»). We ordered him to show us these (мы приказали ему = Человеку-Горе показать их нам) because we thought they might be dangerous (потому что подумали, что они могут быть опасны; danger – опасность). He took them out of their cases (он вынул их из чехлов/футляров; case – ящик; коробка; футляр; чехол) and told us that, in his own country (и сказал нам, что в его стране; own – свой, собственный), he used one to shave his beard (он использовал одну /из них/ для того, чтобы брить бороду) and the other to cut his meat (а другую, чтобы резать мясо).
“In the left pocket there were two black tubes of strange shape. In each of these, there was a flat piece of metal. We ordered him to show us these because we thought they might be dangerous. He took them out of their cases and told us that, in his own country, he used one to shave his beard and the other to cut his meat.
“There were two pockets we could not enter (были /еще/ два кармана, куда мы не могли войти), because they were squeezed closed by his large body (потому что они были сжаты: «сжаты закрытыми» его большим телом). He called these pockets his fobs (он назвал эти карманы часовыми; fob – кармашек для часов). A large silver chain hung out of the right fob (из правого кармана свисала = спускалась большая серебряная цепь; to hang out). There was a wonderful kind of engine hanging at the end of the chain (на конце цепи висела какая-то удивительная машина: «удивительный род машины»). It was round (она круглая), one side silver (одна сторона – серебро = /сделана/ из серебра) and the other some transparent metal (а другая из какого-то прозрачного металла). He put this engine to our ears (он приставил эту машину к нашим ушам). It made a noise like a watermill (она производила шум, как водяная мельница). We guessed (мы пришли к заключению; to guess – гадать, догадываться; догадаться) that it was either some unknown animal, or a god (что это либо какое-то неизвестное /нам/ животное, либо божество). We believe that it is a god (мы думаем, что это божество) because he told us (так как он сказал нам) that he seldom does anything without referring to it (что он редко делает что-нибудь, не советуясь с ним; without – без; без того, чтобы; не /делая что-либо/; to refer – ссылаться /на кого-либо, что-либо/; обращаться /за помощью, советом и т. п./; сверяться с /записями, словарем и т. п./).
