Димка. Кто?
Но Афанасий Павлович молчит. А Василиса Тихоновна ничего не слышит: под отвратительные звуки, издаваемые Солдатом-Предателем она, кажется, к чему-то прислушивается…
И тут внезапно звонит телефон.
Димка (хватая трубку). Але? Кого? (Оглядывается на Василису Тихоновну.) Нет, сейчас она подойти не может. Что? (Слушает.) Хорошо, я ей передам. (Бросает трубку.) Ма, тебе звонили из больницы. Просили передать, для кого-то ты место спрашивала? Освободилось. Старушка эта, ну, только что умерла!
За окном слышен кашляющий звук удаляющегося легкового автомобиля.
Афанасий Павлович (кидаясь к телефону и набирая номер). Диспансер? Доктора Володарского! Как, нет? Александра Ивановича?.. И никогда не было? Как, задолбали, спрашивая? Кто? Что вы такое несете? Вы что?!! (Стоит будто громом пораженный.) Трубку швырнула! Это что же, значит не бомба была?.. А что?.. (Подходит к кухонному столу, на котором просыпается и все никак не может проснуться Солдат-Предатель, трясет его за плечо). Товарищ! К сожалению, не знаю вашей фамилии… Вы… Э…
Димка. Вы не с этого начинаете, Афанасий Павлович! Для начала заедьте ему, например, прямо в морду!..
Афанасий Павлович. Только разве это ЕМУ поможет, Димка?.. (После паузы.) Я знал одного человека, который во время войны, сгорая в самолете, дал себе обет: если останется в живых — пойдет священником в церковь…
Димка. Пошел?
Василиса Тихоновна (вдруг, наконец, ни на кого не глядя). Мне кажется, Он нас слышит… (Стоит с открытыми невидящими глазами, как слепая, и что-то слушает точно так же, как когда-то слушал Афанасий Павлович, и по лицу ее текут обильные слезы…)
Как бы в подтверждение ее слов, в этот момент вновь оживает телефон. Афанасий Павлович со всех ног бежит к нему, но на полдороги останавливается. И стоит, не решаясь снять трубку…
А за окном кухни, на улице, взрывается медью вечно юный, удивительный марш, от которого лично у меня каждый раз, когда я его слышу, продирает мороз по коже. Он носит страшное название «Прощание славянки». Прощание с кем? Навсегда? Нет? И страшно стучит, удаляясь и вновь кого-то уводя за собой, огромный барабан: «Бумс! Бумс!» — как будто по городу идет великан-военком в больших резиновых ботах…
